In the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class XII results declared on Saturday, girls not only outperformed their male counterparts in overall pass percentage but also outshined them in race for the top slots. Both the first and second ranks were bagged by girls from Uttar Pradesh. Meghna Srivastava of Step By Step school Noida is all India topper securing 499 out of total 500 closely followed by Anoushka Chandra of SAJ School Ghaziabad at 498.

Seven students with 497 out of 500 marks are in third place, out which five are girls. Also in the differently-abled category, the second and third rank holders are Pooja Kumari of Model S Dehradun, a visually impaired, and lavanya Jha of DPS RK Puram New Delhi.

Srivastava said there is “no secret formula” for her success and it is only “consistent hard work that had paid off”.

“It’s been a really thrilling experience. There is no secret and one has to work hard throughout the year,” she said.

Srivastava said the second attempt in the Economics paper was as good as the first one but the second paper was easier as compared to the first.

The CBSE exam this year was marred by the controversy over Economics exam paper leak, which was re-conducted on April 25 nearly a month after it was leaked triggering widespread outrage and confusion among students across the country.

“I used to study for about eight hours daily in exam time and for at least five hours on rest of the days throughout the year,” said Srivastava, adding she wants to pursue her graduation in Psychology (Hon) from Delhi University. “Vast avenues are open but I want to go abroad after my graduation to study my favourite subject,” she said.

Srivastava also said she was not expecting the top position but she tried her best to secure full marks in at-least three of the subjects. “Whenever I studied, I put equal weightage to all the subjects but my favourite subject is psychology and so I want to pursue it and make a career by studying it in future,” she said.

She advised students to do their best in whatever subject they choose to study.  “Do not think from which stream you are but try to give your best in your chosen subjects,” she said.

“I am highly thankful to my teachers and parents for they have always reposed trust on me and supported me in every step and had never put any sort of pressure on me,” she added.

Srivastava, a student from the humanities stream secured 99 marks in English (Core), while in the other subjects Psychology, History, Geography and Economics, she scored a perfect 100.

Anoushka Chandra of SAJ School, Ghaziabad was next in the fray bagging 498. She scored 98 in English (Core) and 100 in History, Economics, Political science and Psychology.

Anoushka Chandra, who stood second in the exam with 99.6 per cent by scoring 98 in English (Core) and 100 in History, Economics, Political Science and Psychology, is a student of the Seth Anandram Jaipuria School in Ghaziabad. She thanked her parents and her school principal for her success.

The third topper in the differently-abled category lavanya Jha of Delhi Public School (DPS) RK Puram said that she used to study three to four hours daily apart from the time she spent studying in school.

lavanya, who hails from Patna, stays away from her parents in the hostel of DPS RK Puram Delhi. “I want to pursue graduation in Psychology from the Delhi University (DU),” said lavanya. 17-year-old lavanya comes under visually-impaired category. She did her Class X from the St Joseph’s Convent, Patna after which she shifted to Delhi.

“I am very happy. It’s an overwhelming moment. I want to thank my parents and school,” she said.

The overall pass percentage was 83.01 per cent as against last year’s 82.02 per cent.
