A girl student committed suicide in Ghaziabad after a teacher barged into her house demanding unpaid school fees and got her father detained, police said on Thursday.
The father of the 16-year-old Class IX student at the DSP Higher Secondary School in Ghaziabad could not pay her school fees. He then shifted her to another school without clearing the dues, police said.
On Wednesday night, the DSP School teacher, along with three accomplices, came to the student’s house and demanded Rs 11,000 outstanding fees from her father.
Her father Ratan Singh, a security guard who lives in a rented accommodation, sought some time to pay. After a heated argument, the teacher informed police who took Singh away for questioning.
When Singh was in police custody, the student, who was alone in the house, hanged herself from a window with her scarf, said police adding that her three other sisters and one brother had gone out in the neighbourhood to play.
As the local residents came to know about the incident, they informed police and the girl’s father who was also at the police station.
“At the time when the girl committed suicide, her mother was out of station at Jalone. Otherwise, the unfortunate incident could have been
averted,” a local resident told The Pioneer.
On the complaint of Singh, police registered a criminal case of abetment of suicide against four people. The accused were named as Kavita, Shashi, Ashok and Durgesh - all teachers and staff of the DSP Higher Secondary School.
“We have registered the case under Section 306 of IPC against the accused. The arrest is yet to be made,” said Anish Gautam, Inspector, Sihani Gate police station.
