A day after a groom, a software engineer, and his grandmother were killed and his bride was seriously injured when a gift packet — the couple had received at their wedding reception a few days ago — exploded, preliminary police investigations on Saturday revealed that the parcel was dispatched from Raipur in Chhattisgarh through the SkyKing courier service.
Senior police officials on Saturday said efforts were on to trace the sender of the parcel which weighed nearly 2.10 kg.
Two special police teams were formed to carry out further investigation into the incident with one of teams having already left for Raipur.
The forensic and bomb squads during investigations found that the bomb was highly sophisticated and was an electronic explosive. Sources said that such types of explosives are usually used by the Army or by terror outfits. Reportedly, such a type of bomb had been used in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Meanwhile, locals in Patnagarh held a public demonstration after the deceased youth Soumyasekhar Sahoo’s dead body arrived at his house from the VIMSAR in Burla, demanding a high-level probe into the incident which has sent shockwaves in the area. The locals said the youth’s family is very educated and amicable and did not have any enmity with anyone in the locality.
Earlier on Friday, two of the family including the groom Soumyasekhar of Bholanathpada and his grandmother were killed while his newly-wed wife Rima was injured after the parcel sent as a marriage gift exploded.
The trio was first rushed to the Patnagarh Government Hospital and later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, where the elderly woman succumbed to her injuries. Soumyasekhar died while being shifted to the VIMSAR in Burla. Soumyasekhar’s wife is still battling for her life at the VIMSAR.
