Tirath Singh Rawat, Garhwal MP, was sworn in as the 10th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on Wednesday a day after the resignation of Trivendra Singh Rawat. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Baby Rani Maurya at the Raj Bhawan in a function that was attended by previous CM Trivendra Singh Rawat, Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, BJP national vice-president Raman Singh and party’s State in-charge Dushyant Kumar Gautam along with a number of MLAs, MPs and workers.
Talking to the media after the swearing-in, Rawat said that discussion will be held and the State Cabinet will be finalised in a couple of days.
Earlier during the day, Rawat’s name was proposed by Trivendra Singh Rawat in the meeting of the BJP legislature party.
Thanking the national leadership of the party, the MLAs and party workers, Tirath Singh Rawat said that he would carry forward the development works undertaken by the State Government as well as the dream projects of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the service of Uttarakhand and its people. After he was sworn in as the CM, the previous CM Trivendra Singh Rawat stressed that he will fully support the new CM and his Government for the development of the State, welfare of the people and strengthening the party.
Active in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since his college days, Tirath Singh Rawat has held various positions in the past including that of the State’s first Education Minister and the BJP State president. He is currently the Garhwal MP. Announcement of his name as the State’s new Chief Minister came as a surprise for many as most political pundits were not counting him among those likely to be made the CM.
