Gambia cough syrup deaths: DCGI probes; Haryana sends syrup samples to WB lab

Published on:

India’s drug regulator, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), has began a probe into charges that the use of a domestic cough syrup could potentially be linked to death of children in Gambia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday warned that four “contaminated” and “substandard” cough syrups allegedly produced by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited based in Haryana’s Sonepat could be the reason for the deaths in the West African nation.

The Haryana Government is sending the samples of the syrups  to the Central Drug Lab in Kolkata for testing and affirming any possible  “contamination”. Its results will guide further course of action.
