Exit polls conflict; BJP leads all, Cong in dumps?

Exit polls in the national Capital indicate a surge for the Bharatiya Janata Party which appears to have an edge over the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi. Delhi witnessed a triangular contest between the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the 70 Assembly seats.

An India Today-ORG survey predicted a massive victory for the BJP. The survey conducted by the combine shows that Congress will get 21 seats, BJP will win with 41 seats, AAP will get six and Others will get two seats. This may come as a rude jolt to the AAP and its supporters who have been claiming victory even before the votes were cast.

However, C-Voter exit poll results predicted a hung Assembly with BJP getting 29 seats, Congress 21, AAP 16 and Others four. Meanwhile, the ABP News-Nielsen survey shows the BJP getting 32 seats, the Congress 18, the AAP 18, while Others will manage just two. According to the Times Now-C-Voter survey, Congress will bag 21 seats, BJP will win 29, and the new political outfit AAP 16, while Others will get four. “These are conflicting exit polls. The BJP is getting a clear majority in the national Capital” said a poll watcher.

The Delhi Assembly polls witnessed a record turnout of 66 per cent, the highest so far, said Election Commission officials. The 1993 polls, the first time Delhi had Assembly polls, had a turnout of 61.75 per cent, the highest record until Wednesday’s turnout. In the 2008 Assembly elections, a total of 57.58 per cent polling was recorded. A total of 810 candidates battled it out in the polls in which over 11.9 million voters were eligible to exercise their franchise. Ballot count will be held on December 8.
