ED seeks Interpol Red Corner Notice against lalit Modi

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has sought an Interpol Red Corner Notice (RCN) against former Indian Premier league (IPl) boss lalit Modi in connection with its ongoing probe in a money laundering case relating to financial irregularities in the conduct of T-20 cricket tournaments. The agency’s Mumbai office moved the ED headquarters with a request for the issuance of RCN against lalit Modi on the basis of a non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued against him recently by a designated court.
The agency has sought the RCN as the notice served by it earlier under the Prevention of Money laundering Act to lalit Modi was returned by the lawyer of the former IPl Commissioner. The ED has alleged that lalit Modi, who is currently based in the UK, did not cooperate with it in the probe in the case under the Prevention of Money laundering Act, sources said.
The ED headquarters on Tuesday forwarded the legal request from its Mumbai office to the CBI head office here to get a notice issued through the latter’s Interpol wing. The CBI will process the request after due verification. CBI is the nodal agency for Interpol-related affairs in India. A Red Corner Notice is issued to seek the location and arrest of wanted persons in criminal cases. The person when arrested in the wake of RCN can be extradited to face legal action in the country.
Once the Red notice is sounded, the Interpol seeks to arrest the person in any part of the world and notifies that country to take his or her custody for further action at their end.ED had last month moved a special PMlA court in Mumbai seeking NBW against lalit Modi after he did not respond to summons sent to him.
The agency is probing lalit Modi, the IPl and its executives under anti-money laundering laws under a case registered in 2012. The PMlA case was registered after taking cognisance of an FIR filed by Chennai police on a cheating complaint filed by former BCCI chief N Srinivasan against lalit Modi and others.
