EC finalises VP Electoral College

The Election Commission on Thursday said it has finalised the Electoral College for the vice presidential election, necessitated due to the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankar from the post.

The vice president of India is elected by an Electoral College comprising the elected members and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and the elected members of the Lok Sabha.  In a statement, the poll authority said it has finalised the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election, 2025. In a post on X, the poll body shared a press note, which said, “...the Commission has finalised the Electoral College list for the Vice-Presidential Election, 2025. These members are listed in a continuous serial order, arranged alphabetically based on the State/Union Territory of their respective Houses.”

The Electoral College list will be available for purchase at a counter set up in the Election Commission office from the date of notification, which is likely to be announced soon, the poll body said. The development comes nearly two weeks after Jagdeep Dhankar resigned from the Vice President’s office, citing health reasons. Dhankar resigned as vice president on July 21, a little more than two years ahead of the end of his tenure.

Though Dhankar quit within two years of the five-year term in office, his successor will get a complete term, and not just the remainder. As per Article 66(1) of the Constitution, the Vice-President of India is elected by an Electoral College comprising the elected members of the Rajya Sabha, nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and the elected members of the Lok Sabha.

In compliance with Rule 40 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974, the Election Commission is mandated to prepare and maintain an updated list of the members of this Electoral College, along with their latest addresses.
