Easy money and lure of filthy lucre drove a BA first year girl student of Delhi University’s Deshbandhu College to kidnap a three-year-old son of her landlord with the help of her minor brother, according to police.
However, after the abduction for a ransom of Rs 5 crore, the girl failed in her mission as a South West district police team swooped on her after monitoring her calls to the victim’s family. The zeroed in on the location where the child was kept, and rescued him. The girl and his minor brother were arrested from the spot.
The ordeal of the parents started on Thursday when the boy went missing. Following which they lodged a police complaint.
According to the victim’s mother, the accused girl with her brother and parents were residing on the first floor of their house on rent. “Our child was kidnapped around 7 pm on Thursday. The incident was captured in our neighbours’ CCTV camera in which a young boy is seen kidnapping the child. An hour later my husband received a message demanding Rs 5 crore as ransom for the boy’s release. My husband negotiated the amount and they finally came down to Rs 2 crore,” said the mother.
“Again a message was received stating that if we want our child back safely, we should ask people gathered outside the house to disperse. Meanwhile my husband had already informed police and the phone number was traced down by police and she was caught,” said the mother, adding that the girl is in relationship with a boy in her college and on his influence she might have taken this step.
Throwing light on the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Devender Arya said, “On Thursday, we received a Police Control Room (PCR) call at Vasant Kunj South police station regarding a missing child. Initial enquiry revealed that the accused person demanded a ransom for the child’s release from the victim’s father through WhatsApp messenger.”
“Teams were constituted and after several raids, a girl with her brother was arrested from a house in Ghitorni. During sustained interrogation, she revealed that she had hatched the conspiracy, along with her brother, to kidnap the child for ransom. For this purpose, they had rented a room in Ghitroni. She disclosed that they were planning to kidnap the child since August for easy money,” the DCP said.
