A first year student of the Delhi University sustained more than 38 stitches on her back when an unidentified man attacked her with a blade while trying to snatch her bag in North Delhi’s Timarpur area on Thursday afternoon, police said on Friday.

Ruling out the angle that the girl was being stalked by the man or was attacked by a jilted lover, Jatin Narwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), said, “During investigation, we found that the unidentified man was trying to snatch the backpack of the student by cutting the bag. But as the student was carrying the bag on her back, she sustained deep cuts.”

In her complaint, the 20-year-old girl, a student of Zakir Hussain College, stated that the incident happened around 3.30 pm when a man attacked her from behind. As the incident happened in full public view, the man fled from the spot after the girl raised an alarm.

The girl was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for injuries and discharged later.
