In a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs on its crackdown on a group of protesting JNU students on February 9, the Delhi Police said on Tuesday that Democratic Students Union (DSU) activists led by Umar Khalid raised anti-national slogans on that day, but JNU Students’ Union leader Kanhaiya
Kumar stood silent there and didn’t join them in seditious activities.
According to the report submitted by the Delhi Police Special Branch on the incident, DSU activists were miffed because JNU authorities did not allow them to screen a documentary on the “history of the occupation of Kashmir.”
During the February 9 protest, DSU activists, led by Umar Khalid, began shouting anti-India slogans and singing songs eulogising Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt. However, the report said that Kanhaiya Kumar didn’t raise anti-national slogans but was just standing with DSU activists and Umar Khalid, who has been absconding since then.
A situation report prepared by the Intelligence wing of the Delhi Police has said that DSU and Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) in JNU were volatile and reactive and indulged in anti-national, anti-social activities and also insulted Hindu deities.
The report stated that at 5 pm on February 9 there was a protest by 80-90 students.
Just then 30 to 40 activists of the ABVP led by Saurabh Kumar Sharma reached the campus and accused them of indulging in anti-national activity by supporting Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt.
While the ABVP activists raised slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai,” the left supported students were shouting slogans like, “Bharat Ki Barbadi tak Jang rahegi jang rehegi”( the fight will continue till India is destroyed), “Kashimire ki ajadi tak jang rahegi, jang rahegi,(the fight will continue till Kashmir is liberated)”, “India go back”, “Hum lekar Rahenge Azadi Azadi, Azadi, (We will take freedom come what may)” “Pakistan zindabad”, “Kitne Afzal maroge ghar-ghar se Afzal niklega (Afzals will come out from every home)”.
According to the report, apart from Kanhaiya Kumar, Anirban Bhattacharya, Anjali, Anvesha, Awasthi, Bhavna,
Komal, Riyaz, Bubina, Umar Khalid and Samar, members of All India Student Association and Students Federation of India were also participating in the protest.
The report stated that many left supported unions active in JNU are mild and non-reactive, and only two unions, DSU and DSF, have been found to be indulging in anti-national and anti-social activities. “However, they are less than ten in number. Sometimes they prepare nude and objectionable posters of deities on their computers and affix them on walls to hurt religious sentiments. This group mourned
the death of Afzal Guru. They celebrated the killing of CRPF jawans in Dantewada in 2010. They worshipped Mahishasur in place of Goddess Durga during Navratri, last year. They invited Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani for a meeting but JNU authorities imposed a ban on it. They ask for beef in the hostel mess,” the report said.
The report prepared by the ‘Y and S wing’ which keeps an eye on activities of students, student organizations and people who have a stake in JNU, states the arrest of JNU students union president may aggravate the resentment not only among left-supported student groups but also among the student community and teachers in various educational institutions.
It stated that till November 12 last year there were many left-supported student unions active in JNU which often raised slogans and held protests on different national as well as local issues, but their gatherings remained very low-key.
Similarly, the report also mentioned that it had submitted a report in October last year and the ACP of the Special Branch had met the then vice-chancellor Sudhir Kumar Sopory. During this meeting,
discussions were held on various subjects, including CCTV surveillance in the campus to avoid any untoward incidents.
