'Dowry' death: BSP MP, wife, son held, sent to 14-day jail

Bahujan Samaj Party MP Narendra Kashyap, along his wife Devendri Devi and son Sagar Kashyap, was arrested on Thursday as police found “prima facie” complicity of the trio in “dowry harassment” in connection with the death of Sagar’s wife Himani. The trio was later produced before the court of Mohammad Kamruzzama Khan, which sent them to 14-day judicial custody.

Police sent them to Dasna jail. Other three accused persons — Siddharth, Sarita and Shobha — named in the first information report (FIR) are reportedly absconding. Officials said that they will be arrested soon.

Earlier in the day, Narendra Kashyap, who is a Rajya Sabha member, and his wife tried to dodge the police and got admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Yashoda Hospital for chest pain. However, the Ghaziabad Police directed the Yashoda Hospital administration to discharge the BSP MP and his wife as they were facing arrest on the charges of dowry death under Sections 304B/498A of IPC and sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

A team of Government doctors was constituted to examine the MP and his wife to determine if they actually require medical attention, police said.

Chief Medical Superintendent of Yashoda Hospital Sangeeta Garg said that after examination by the team, police arrested Kashyap and his wife.

Sagar Kashyap was arrested from the residence, the official added. Meanwhile, former BSP Minister Hiralal Kashyap on Thursday threatened to immolate himself in front of Parliament if justice was denied to his daughter, Himansi, who allegedly committed suicide due to dowry harasmment .

“The slogan of ‘Beti-Padhao, Beti-Bachao’ is raised in Parliament whereas an MP’s daughter-in-law is murdered... If action is not taken against those guilty and my daughter is denied justice, I and my family will immolate ourselves before Parliament”, Hiralal Kashyap told reporters after performing the last rites of his daughter here.

The aggrieved father also said that he would seek appointment with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi if the action was not taken against the killers of his daughter. Himani Kashyap was found dead under mysterious circumstances with gunshot injury in the bathroom in her home in Ghaziabad on Wednesday.

Himani’s uncle Om Prakash had on Wednesday lodged a complaint with the Ghaziabad Police alleging that his niece Himani was shot dead for dowry. In the FIR, he alleged that her in-laws were demanding an SUV after the marriage was solemnised. “We have registered a criminal case under Sections 304B, 498 A of IPC and 3 and 4 dowry prohibition Act on the complaint of deceased uncle Om Prakash” said SP City Salman Taj Patil when asked for his comments.

The family members did not inform the police about the incident and tried to hush up the matter. The police came to know about it from the hospital memo. The investigation into Himani’s death started after police visited the spot and found evidence suggesting foul play, said the police official.
