The team of doctors led by Dr Richard Beale from Britain which took care of late J Jayalalithaa during her hospitalisation at the Apollo Hospital said here on Monday that the speculations and rumours surrounding the death of the former Chief Minister were baseless and unsubstantiated.

In a hurriedly convened Press meet at Chennai by Apollo Hospital, Dr Richard Beale, the specialist from Britain who led the team of doctors, said the former Chief Minister was given the best treatment and she died following a cardiac arrest on December 5. Dr Babu Abraham, critical care consultant, Apollo Hospitals, said the former Chief Minister was diagnosed with “respiratory failure due to infection” when she was admitted to the hospital on September 22, 2016.

Dr Beale said Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital with sepsis. “She had co-morbidities and uncontrolled diabetes. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection injures its own tissues and organs,” said the doctor who was specially flown in for attending to the former Chief Minister immediately after her hospitalisation.

Dr Abraham said Jayalalithaa was diagnosed with “respiratory failure due to infection” when she was brought to the hospital on September 22 at 10 30 pm. “We gave critical and supportive care to the Chief Minister immediately after her admission to the hospital.

Dr Beale also rejected the contention of certain people that the former Chief Minister’s legs had been amputated. “There was no amputation or transplantation,” said Dr Beale.
