Dishonoured! DU students cry foul as 250 out of 260 fail exams

At least 410 Honours students of Delhi University colleges have failed in Sociology examination triggering protests alleging error in evaluation.

While a whopping 250 out of 260 students of Shivaji College have failed the examination, 102 out of 120 Political Science (Honours) students at laxmi Bai College, 38 out of 50 at Janki Devi Memorial College and 20 out of 25 at Keshav Mahavidyalaya have also failed to clear the exam. Sociology in Contemporary India is an interdisciplinary subject for Honours students in these colleges.

A group of students on Monday staged a protest at the office of the Dean of Students’ Welfare, alleging discrepancies and error in evaluation and sought his intervention.

“I have taken note of their request and the matter will be taken up with DU’s examination branch soon,” Dean, Students’ Welfare, JM Khurana said.

The students, who are all in the final-year, are panicking as their failure to clear the exam can hamper their plans for higher study. A Shivaji College student, who has topped the class in other subjects but has managed to score barely 15 marks in Sociology said: “I have already secured admission at a foreign university for higher studies. My aggregate percentage is excellent but I might miss out on the chance if the result is not rectified.”

Divya Saini, student of Janki Devi Memorial College alleged that the college authorities have given good marks to some undeserving students in return of personal favours and gifts. “These students neither attended classes nor submitted any project or assignment yet managed to score”, she alleged.

Those students who approached college authorities, were asked to apply for re-evaluation. “This isn’t a problem pertaining to re-evaluation which basically involves re-calculation of awarded marks. How can all the students fail, there is some discrepancy for sure,” said another student. Delhi University’s examination head Satish Kumar, when contacted, said the varsity was looking into the matter and the error, if any, will be rectified soon.
