DERC to raise tariff by 7% to make up for discoms cost

A power tariff hike to the tune of 5 to 7 per cent is expected in Delhi from November. Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) is likely to levy a fuel surcharge to help private distribution companies adjust their power purchase cost (PPAC).

The power regulator had done away with imposing around 8 per cent of PPAC in July. The discoms have sought 17.1 per cent hike in their quarterly fuel surcharge submissions. The DERC received submissions from all three discoms on Tuesday. According to sources, BSES Yamuna Power limited (BYPl) has quoted the highest figure for adjustment in power purchase cost followed by Tata Power Delhi Distribution limited (TPDDl) and BSES Rajdhani Power limited (BRPl).

“The submission by BYPl demands 17.1 per cent towards their adjustments. For TPDDl it is over 8 per cent, whereas for BRPl it is 7.26 per cent,” said an official.

In January, the regulator had hiked the fuel surcharge to the tune of 8 per cent for BYPl, 6 per cent for BRPl and 7 per cent for TPDDl. While hiking the power tariff to 7.5 per cent for domestic consumers, the DERC in July had withdrawn PPAC of around 8 per cent till October. The withdrawal of the PPAC resulted in marginal decline of tariff for the consumers, whose monthly consumption does not exceed 400 units.
