AManipuri student of Delhi University’s Hindu college allegedly committed suicide in his hostel’s room on Sunday morning. Twenty-year-old Chongtham Kripa Singh was a first year student of BA (Hons) Music. A suicide note was recovered from the spot in which he did not blame anyone for his death.
The note, however, suggested that he was under depression. Police said the student strangled himself using a wire of mobile phone charger and his body was found lying on his bed.
The incident came to light when fellow hostellers knocked repeatedly at the door but to no avail. Having got no response, they broke open the door only to find him lying unconscious. Police were informed immediately that took him to Hindu Rao Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The police are probing the matter. Kripa’s friends said he was suffering from depression for the past two months and undergoing treatment in Manipur as well as at Delhi University Health Centre.
His roommate was not present in the room at the time of
the incident.
Kripa’s father Bijoy Singh, who has been in the Capital for last few days, admitted that his son was under depression. He said he had come to Delhi hearing of the illness of his son and was staying at a guest house near the college campus.
“He was very good at music though poor at studies. Probably he was depressed over this. I wanted to take Kripa back to Manipur for further treatment so that he could recover,” Singh said who had last met his son on Saturday evening.
“Kripa did not interact much with his fellow mates and was an introvert. We received a call around 5:40 in the morning. He used a mobile charger to strangle himself. It appears from his suicide note that he had developed negative thoughts towards life,” said a police official.
The body was sent for postmortem at Hindu Rao Hospital and was later handed over to the family members. This is the second incident of suicide at Hindu College in just six months. In November 2012, a master’s student Shashi Shekhar had also committed suicide.
Meanwhile, Hindu College principal Pradumn Kumar said the wardens had been taking frequent rounds of the hostels ever since November 2012 suicide incident. “Hostel committee members that include senior teachers had also counseled students on how to deal with exam pressure,” he said.
