A Delhi-based bookie, involved in the spot-fixing episode, managed to give police the slip when its Special Cell sleuths tried to raid a posh South Delhi club in search of him.
Bhupendra Nagar’s name has figured in the ongoing investigation that led to the arrest of three players of Rajasthan Royals.
The bookie managed to get away as the officers of the Special Cell, who were in mufti, were stopped by the bouncer of the club.
An argument ensued, and as luck would have it, the bookie Bhupendra Nagar, who works as the Chief Security Officer at the club, intervened to sort out the issue.
When he got a whiff of the impending police operation against him, he quietly left the scene, as the cops had no clue about his identity.
Now, police teams are raiding several places in Delhi and Faridabad in order to nab him.
Delhi Police sources said that Nagar, who is a resident of Faridabad, is the neighbour of Rajasthan Royals player Ajit Chandila.
Investigators found the phone number of Nagar from the call detail records (CDR) of Chandila as the two were in constant touch with each other. Police also intercepted several phone conversations regarding spot fixing, between them.
“With the help of technical surveillance, the police traced Nagar to Jynxxx Club in Nehru Place,” police sources said.
Acting on the tip-off, a team of the Special Cell conducted a raid at 9.30 pm on Wednesday night at Jynxxx Club, dressed in civvies.
“The Special Cell sleuths began looking for Nagar but suddenly, a bouncer, who was in an inebriated state, stopped them and started arguing with them,” the sources added.
A heated argument ensued between the bouncer and the Special Cell team.
After some time, the Chief Security Officer of the club intervened to sort out the matter.
The investigators told him that they were from Delhi Police and they were looking for a bookie named Bhupendra Nagar.
"The Chief Security Officer, who was Bhupendra Nagar himself, told the police that Nagar was sitting inside the club and then he left.
"later the police came to know that there was another employee by the name of Nagar in the club.
"When the police tried to trace Bhupendra Nagar, they discovered that he had fled the scene, leaving his motorcycle behind, and had switched off his cell phone," the sources added.
The manager of the club, Rohit, was taken into custody but was let off by the sleuths around 11 am on Thursday after his replies were found to be satisfactory," police sources said.
