Two suspected members of the Chhota Shakeel gang were killed in a gang war inside a sub-jail in the coastal city of Mangaluru on Monday morning. More than six inmates were injured in the clash.
Madoor Yusuf, 42, who was under trial for multiple cases — including the killing of Sukhananda Shetty, a BJP leader in Mangaluru, and Ganesh Shetty, a sharp shooter allegedly linked to Chhota Shakeel, who has been convicted in an attempt to
murder case in Mumbai, were killed in the clash.
Madoor Yusuf, alias Isubu, who hailed from Kasargod in Kerala, is facing over 20 criminal cases — including the murder of former Deputy Prime Minister lK Advani’s gunman Shekar Rathod.
According to police, the incident took place during the breakfast assembly in the jail. The police are ascertaining the reason behind the incident and also how the inmates got access to weapons. They said initial investigation showed it was a clash between two gangs.
According to police sources, Yusuf was arrested in July 2010 at Riyadh in Saudi Arabia with the help of Interpol and Ganesh Shetty was arrested in Mangaluru by the CCB police in March, 2010.
Sources said that the gang war broke out in the course of a clash between the Yusuf gang and the gang of Akash Bhavan Sharan, a close associate of underworld don Vicky Shetty, during the breakfast hour at the prison. The gang used machetes in the attack.
“It was a clash between two gangs and two persons were killed in the incident. We are going to investigate why the clash took place and how they procured lethal weapons inside the jail,” said Mangaluru Police Commissioner S Murugan.
The police have taken Rohidas, alias Sharan, alias Akash Bhavan Sharan, and his associates into custody
