Centre orders fire audit of museums

Published on:

Following the devastating fire in the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday ordered an Energy and Fire Audit of all establishments of the Ministry across the country even as he said plans are afoot to set up a new museum in Delhi at a cost of Rs 225 crore.

Javadekar, who visited the museum, said such an audit is important, as there are 34 museums which are visited by thousands of people daily. The Minister said there will be an enquiry.

“This is a real loss. We will assess the loss and see how we can restore it and how the recovery plan can be made,”

he said.

The conceptual work of the new museum is in progress and a committee has been formed for the purpose. It is going to come up on 6.5 acres allotted behind Purana Quila, near Pragati Maidan.
