CBI tenure of Asthana, three others clipped

Published on:

The Government on Thursday curtailed the tenure of CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana, who was earlier sent on forced leave, with immediate effect, according to an official order issued on Thursday.

The tenures of three more IPS officers in the CBI — Joint Director Arun Kumar Sharma, Deputy Inspector General Manish Kumar Sinha and Superintendent of Police Jayant J Naiknavare — have been curtailed, reads the order.

The development comes days after Alok Verma was shunted out of the post of CBI Director and appointed Director General of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards by a high powered committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comprising Justice AK Sikri of the Supreme Court and leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

Verma had resigned after being removed as CBI chief. It is not known if his resignation letter has been accepted. The shake-up comes days ahead of the January 24 meet for picking a new CBI Director.
