The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned Industrialist Vikram Kothari of Rotomac groups and his son Rahul Kothari on Wednesday at its headquarters in Delhi after they were brought from Kanpur on Tuesday night.
The CBI had also questioned them for two days in Kanpur. The Kotharis are accused of defaulting a consortium of seven nationalised banks of Rs 3,695 cr.
The CBI is also probing Vikram Kothari’s wife Sadhna Kothari, and directors of his companies who kept submitted fake documents to manage loans.
In a related development, Bank of India on Wednesday said it had sanctioned some loan to Rotomac group companies as a consortium lender and that had turned into a non-performing asset (NPA) or bad loan in the 2015-16 fiscal for which it has already made 100 per cent provisioning.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had notified all the land, sea and airports in the country to prevent the exit of Kothari, and his family members from India, in connection with its money laundering probe.
Meanwhile, the Income-Tax Department had also attached 14 bank accounts of the pen manufacturer as part of its tax evasion probe against the company.
The I-T Department has also attached four immovable assets of the Rotomac group and its promoters in connection with an alleged tax evasion probe against them. These attachment of assets, they said, has been carried out to “recover outstanding tax demands” from the group, understood to be about Rs 85 crore.
The ED had slapped criminal charges under the Prevention of Money laundering Act (PMlA) against the company and its promoters on February 18, based on a CBI FIR filed on the same day.
