Capt may get Maha Guv role

Published on:

Soldier-turned-politician and scion of erstwhile Patiala royal family Capt Amarinder Singh may soon get a new role as Governor of Maharashtra.

Speculation is rife that the BJP leadership has arrived at a consensus over veteran politician’s name for the gubernatorial post. The development came days after the incumbent BS Koshyari expressed his desire to leave Raj Bhavan.

In December, the BJP included Capt Amarinder in its  National Executive.

The eighty-year-old has already handed over the responsibility of his home constituency, Patiala, to his daughter Jai Inder Kaur.

Punjab BJP president Ashwani Sharma, when asked about the development, said that he has no idea about the same as yet.

At the same time, the Capt Amarinder camp is also maintaining a strategic silence. It is also possible that Capt Amarinder may refuse the proposal and decide to stay in Punjab’s politics.

It has been learnt that BJP, which had high expectations with Capt Amarinder, was not expecting much from the former chief minister, especially after the performance during Assembly polls. Capt Amarinder, who lost to a first-timer in his home segment in 2022 polls, failed to give much leverage to BJP.

However, the political veteran has a considerable support base in Punjab, on which it would be banking by giving him a suitable post.
