Prime Minister-led panel on Monday selected Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma, a 1979-batch IPS officer, as the new CBI chief. The post of CBI director was vacant for over a month following Anil Sinha’s retirement on December 2.
Additional CBI Director and Gujarat-cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana was the interim director of the CBI. Selection committee member Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge raised some queries on selection of Verma. Maharashtra DGP Satish Mathur and Internal Security Special Secretary RK Dutta too were considered by the panel.
