CAA rules will be framed after Covid jab drive ends, says Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday “assured” the West Bengal BJP leaders that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be implemented at the earliest and that rules regarding it will be framed after the Covid19 precaution dose vaccination exercise was completed.

The CAA seeks to provide citizenship to persecuted minority groups who crossed over from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan by December 2014. Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said the Home Minister gave them the assurance during a meeting where they urged him for the implementation of the CAA.

The six minority groups that have been specifically identified under CAA are Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians and Parsis. The controversial act which was opposed by Opposition parties does not include persecuted Muslims in the Muslim sects like Shias and Ahmedis who also face persecution in Pakistan. Opposition parties have attacked non-inclusion of Muslim minorities in the act as being against the secular nature of Indian Constitution.

Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, told reporters after meeting Shah that he also handed him a list of nearly 100 Trinamool Congress leaders allegedly involved in the recruitment scam in which former West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee has been arrested.
