Cocking a snook at the Delhi Police, a gang of burglars not only broke open dozens of shops in Central Delhi’s lahori Gate area but also they indulged in an impromptu victory dance to celebrate their success. The unusual act was caught on a CCTV camera installed in the lane, but the burglars had
their faces covered, making things difficult for police to identify them.
Police got to know about the Sunday incident after Police Control Room (PCR) received several calls from residents about shops being burgled in lahori Gate area.
According to police, burglars managed to steal goods and cash worth Rs 2 lakh. Buoyed by their first success, they went ahead and broke the locks of five other shops and got valuables, said police, adding that it remains to be seen whether they were aware of the fact that CCTV cameras were installed on every pole in the market area.
“Police are now sifting through CCTV grabs to identify the gang who despite knowing the fact that lahori Gate area shops were fully wired, dared police by doing a jig as if to taunt them; come get us if you can,” said officers.
CCTV grabs show four of them moving stealthily and they stop before a shop. They look around to make sure that they are not being followed in that lane. Then, they break open the shutter of a shop.
The video shows four of them entering into the shop and laying their hands on valuables with the fifth gang members supposedly keeping an eye on any movement, breaking into a dance. Possibly finding enough time on their hand they broke into a jig to amuse themselves and celebrate the success. They were caught dancing right in front of the camera perched on the street light pole.
“It is a rare incident. Usually burglars want to ensure they are not noticed when committing such acts,” said police, adding that they are trying to gain information about the gang.
A police officer tasked with the probe said it is difficult to say why they danced. “May be they were unaware that they were being watched. We are studying the modus operandi of the gang. An FIR has been lodged at the lahori Gate Police Station and a probe has been launched to get them,” he said.
