In a major embarrassment to Mulayam Singh Yadav, BSP supremo Mayawati on Wednesday ruled out any alliance with its bitter rival Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and rejected RJD chief lalu Prasad’s proposal for a joint front against the BJP in the State, on the lines of the RJD-JD(U) tie up in Bihar.
Immediately after SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said he was ready to consider a pact with the BSP if lalu Prasad took the initiative, Mayawati slammed the law and order situation in the SP-ruled State and said her party would go it alone in Uttar Pradesh (UP).
She also accused the SP and the BJP of having a covert pact in the State for communal polarisation of votes. “Whenever the SP Government comes to power, incidents of crime, robberies, communal violence and rape reach their peak. It is the character of this party. If incidents of this nature do not take place then this party will be finished,” Mayawati told reporters.
“Therefore, keeping all these things in mind, there is no question of joining hands with the SP and fighting elections together. People in UP want the BSP to come back to power and restore peace and harmony there,” a confident Mayawati said.
Blaming both the SP and the BJP for the communal violence in UP, she said: “Both SP and BJP have joined hands covertly and therefore there is no question of joining any other party.”
The BSP and the SP had contested the 1993 Assembly elections together but parted ways soon. After the alliance broke, Mulayam had termed it a big political mistake.
In lucknow, UP BJP head laxmi Kant Bajpai said Mulayam Singh Yadav’s readiness to forge an alliance with the BSP was indicative of his frustration.
“Mulayam’s statement regarding an alliance with the BSP is indicative of his frustration. It seems the statement was given in order to try and save each other on the issue of corruption,” Bajpai told reporters. He said such a statement showed that despite having a clear majority, the ruling SP had accepted its “defeat”.
