BRT corridor must be scrapped, says Kejri

The Capital’s controversial Bus Rapid Transport corridor for buses should be scrapped in its present form, said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asking Transport Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj to get to the bottom of it.

Introduced six-years-ago in South Delhi, the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) corridor had led to massive traffic jams prompting demands for scrapping it. Kejriwal’s predecessor Sheila Dikshit had backed BRT till the very end of her tenure but had relented just before the December Assembly polls, promising to disband it, if voted back to power. The Government had spent around Rs 150 crore to build the BRT corridor.

Senior officials said the corridor in its present form is creating problems rather than serving its purpose of urging people to use public transport and controlling pollution. Only 5.8 km of the project could be executed; the operational project could not even be completed from Ambedkar Nagar till Delhi Gate. The Transport Minister has however, refused to comment.
