Girl’s parents, maternal uncle held for hacking youth to death

In a murder most grotesque, a 23-year-old professional photographer, Ankit, was killed in front of his mother over a love relationship with a girl from a different religion in West Delhi’s Khyala area on Thursday evening.

The Delhi Police has arrested three accused persons while the fourth accused — a minor — has been detained and on Friday requisitioned the services of the Central Para-Military forces to maintain law and order in the area as the victim belonged to the majority community and the accused persons belong to the minority community.

The girl told the media that her boyfriend was killed by her family members and that she was scared for her own life. She added that they were planning to get married soon.

Ankit — reportedly in love with a 20-year-old girl living in his neighbourhood for the past two to three years — was murdered by the girl’s father, mother, maternal uncle and younger brother at the Khyala road.

As the girl’s family was against this relationship since they came to know about it, on that fateful day they went to Ankit’s house to ask him not to be in touch with the girl anymore. An argument broke out between the two families and during the altercation, the woman’s father, mother, uncle and her minor brother overpowered Ankit and stabbed him in the neck multiple times in the presence of over 100 people who just watched, said police.

He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital by his parents where he was declared brought dead.

Police were informed by the hospital staff.

Eyewitnesses told police that Ankit’s mother who was trying to pacify them, just watched in horror, as her son was murdered.

Based on the statement of Ankit’s family, a case has been registered against the girl’s family. “We have arrested the father, mother and uncle of girl and have registered a case of murder against them. The girl’s brother, who is a juvenile has also been apprehended,” a senior police official said.

Ankit — the sole breadwinner of the family — was the only son of his parents,  who are elderly and not in the best of health.

“The girl’s family had been threatening Ankit to end relationship with their daughter,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar, said.
