BJP and Trinamool Congress will raise in Parliament the issue of Justice AK Ganguly, who has been found guilty of sexual harassment by a Supreme Court panel, continuing as Chairman of West Bengal Human Rights Commission.
“Someone who has violated human rights cannot continue as Chairman of the Human Rights Commission. We will raise this matter in Parliament,” leader of the Opposition in lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said on Twitter. She had earlier maintained that Ganguly should resign, saying not only Caesar but Caesar’s wife should also be above suspicion.
Similarly, the Trinamool Congress has said it would also seek a discussion under Rule 193 on the conduct of the former Supreme Court judge. “We will also raise the issue and give notice under Rule 193 for a discussion in respect of conduct of former Justice Ganguly and demand his resignation from the post of the Chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission,” Chief Whip of the TMC parliamentary party in the lok Sabha, Kalyan Bandopadhyay said.
“It is good. We have also demanded his resignation from the post of Chairman of the WBHRC. If such an issue is raised (by BJP) in Parliament, we have no objection,” another TMC lok Sabha member Saugata Roy said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday wrote a second letter to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking urgent action to remove Justice Ganguly from the WBHRC Chairman’s post.
At the same time, mounting pressure on Ganguly to resign as Chairman of WBHRC, Union Minister Adhir Chowdhury said: “In view of the ramifications of the incident, I think on moral grounds, it is better that Justice Ganguly should resign and face the consequences. I wish he comes out with flying colours.”
