BJP raises pitch on Kairana exodus; Shah slams UP Govt

Published on:

Refuting the Akhilesh Government’s claim that there was no migration from Kairana in Western Uttar Pradesh, the BJP on Monday challenged the Chief Minister to take the 2017 Assembly polls as “a referendum” on the issue of law and order in the State.

The alleged exodus of Hindus from Kairana in Shamli district, which figured in the discussions on the concluding day of the BJP’s National Executive meeting, was described as a bad omen for democracy in the country. “It is bad for democracy,” former BJP president Nitin Gadkari told the media.

The BJP has constituted a seven-member committee — comprising four members of Parliament and three leaders from Uttar Pradesh — for an on-the-spot study at Kairana.

The controversial Mathura violence and alleged migration from Kairana have come in handy for the BJP to take on its political opponent Samajwadi Party (SP) in UP and develop the twin issues as its campaign plank in the State.

Gadkari promised ‘proper action’ after a probe by a party team into the ‘very sensitive matter’ of the said migration.

later in the day, while answering questions from the media, senior party leader and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley asked that if the Chief Minister was “so confident” about law and order in his State he should take next year’s Assembly poll verdict “as a referendum” on the issue. Jaitley said this in response to question on Akhilesh Yadav’s charge that the BJP was “lying” on the alleged migration from western Uttar Pradesh.c
