Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad on Sunday travelled to Hathras to meet the family of the 19-year-old gangrape victim just a day after Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi visited Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, police lathicharge Samajwadi Party and  RLD workers for defying the curfew orders imposed in the village. Azad, who has been raising his voice against the incident, marched toward the district this afternoon along with his supporters but was stopped about 20 km before Hathras.

The Bhim Army chief was later allowed to meet the family. “I demand ‘Y security’ for the family or I'll take them to my house, they aren't safe here. We want an enquiry to be done under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge," Azad said after meeting the victim's family.

The 19-year-old, who was allegedly gang-raped by four men last month, died on Tuesday at a hospital in Delhi, sparking widespread outrage across the country.

The Bhim Army chief has been demanding Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's resignation over the incident.

On Friday, he had joined a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar where a large number of people were gathered with placards and raised slogans against the incident.

"The Hathras victim cannot get justice till UP CM resigns and the Supreme Court takes cognisance of the issue. These kind of culprits should be punished as soon as possible so that others get scared before committing such crimes. We will go to Hathras and till the time the matter doesn't come to Delhi, there is no chance of getting justice," Azad had said, addressing the protesters, PTI reported.
