Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, fondly called “Bhajji”, on Thursday tied the nuptial knot with his long-time girlfriend and Bollywood actress Geeta Basra in a gurdwara in Jalandhar. While the groom looked dapper in a off-white sherwani and red turban, the bride was looking resplendent in a traditional red and gold lehenga. “I am feeling great, very special day of my life,” the 35-year-old cricketer told reporters.
Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali and founder and chairperson of the Reliance Foundation Nita Ambani, who is also the owner of IPl Mumbai Indians, for whom off-spinner Harbhajan plays, were among the dignitaries at the wedding. However, Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was conspicuously absent from the wedding. But cricketers Parthiv Patel, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha were present.
Earlier, a mehendi and sangeet ceremony were also held at Harbhajan’s family home.
The high-profile reception is slated for November 1 in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expected to grace the occasion. Apart from his Team India teammates like Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli, Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachhan, Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra are also likely to attend the reception in the Capital.
Harbhajan and Geeta, who acted in several Hindi and Punjabi films, have had a five-year courtship before they took the marital plunge.
Though Harbhajan belongs to Jalandhar, a few years ago he bought a house in Sector 9 of Chandigarh, where he would settle down.
