Bengal Guv cuts short Assembly speech amid ruckus by BJP

Amid reports of ruckus created by BJP MLAs inside the State Assembly, Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday delivered a brief seven-minute speech on the first day of Budget Session of the House.

This, while Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari lobbed strong questions at the Treasury Bench asking as to why there was no mention of post violence in the Governor’s speech.

Dhankhar, who had earlier expressed reservations about the contents of his speech — prepared by the Government — read only selected paragraphs from it before concluding the speech summarily.

Adhikari, a former senior Trinamool leader and Minister who subsequently joined the BJP ahead of the recently concluded Bengal elections attacked the Government for not making any reference of the post-poll violence and fake vaccine scandal.

“Neither there was any reference of post election attack on the Opposition, nor there was any mention of the fake vaccine scandal in the Governor’s speech,” said Adhikari, adding “it is a shameful to note how both the Supreme Court and High Court have castigated the Government for post poll violence.”

Earlier, the BJP MLAs protesting against the “fake speech of a fake Government” descended on the Well of the House demanding discussion of the violence being perpetrated on the Opposition workers.

The Governor had earlier said he had earlier called up Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to tell her that he had certain reservations about the speech. “I had also requested the Chief Minister for a discussion on the issue to which she said she would get back to me … but she didn’t.”

West Bengal has been witnessing an unprecedented difference of opinion between Raj Bhavan and Nabanna (State secretariat) with things reaching a pass where the Chief Minister even called the Governor a “corrupt person” while her party demanded his removal for his alleged involvement in hawala and Punjab land scam.

The Governor earlier refuted the charges.
