The death of 30-year-old Vineet, who was lodged in police lock-up in Ghaziabad in a double-murder case, has taken an ugly turn with the post-mortem report revealing that he died due to strangulation. Five police officials have been suspended for involvement in the custodial death.

"Five officials of the Indirapuram police station, including SHO Gorakh Nath Yadav, Sub Inspector Rajvir Singh, night sentries Chetan Yadav and Ram Chandra, and night clerk Tota Ram, have been suspended," said Arun Kumar, Additional Director General of the UP Police. Departmental and magisterial enquires have been ordered in the alleged custodial murder, he added.

Vineet’s family members alleged that he succumbed to the torture during his three-day illegal detention in Ghaziabad police station. However, the police claimed Vineet hanged himself with a torn blanket in the toilet of the lock-up. Vineet, a resident of Hathras, was arrested in connection with a robbery-cum-murder case. He was accused of killing a CISF constable and his wife after robbing their house. The bodies of the slain constable and his wife were found at their residence at the CISF complex on April 24. Vineet's brother-in-law Yogesh alleged police manipulated him in the murder case.
