Assam Police has got evidence that youths from the State are undergoing training in jehadi activities under the Bangladesh-based Islamic terror network Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
Director-General of Assam Police Khagen Sarma said this to newsmen on Tuesday and added that the police have been closely monitoring the developments. “We have evidence against several youths visiting Bangladesh and undergoing training under the JMB. Several youths from different districts of the State are under police surveillance and we are closely monitoring the situation,” said Sarma.
He added that some NGOs and institutions have also come under the police scanner after the Burdwan blast. The DGP said this while reacting to the allegation of a section of politicians, mainly the All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) that there are no terror links in Assam and that it’s a conspiracy of the police to harass the Muslims of the State.
“In 1994, we had arrested 24 people on a single day from different parts of the State for their links with HuJI and the Harkat-ul Mujahideen. At that time also the police were criticized but later all the arrested people confessed to their links with the Islamic terror networks,” said the DGP.
He said that the JMB had already set up some bases in West Bengal. “As a neighbouring State of West Bengal, they might try to establish some base in Assam too. However, the forces have been kept on alert and we are keeping a close vigil in lower Assam, Central Assam and in Barak Valley districts,” he said.
After the Burdwan blast earlier this month the Assam Police nabbed six people from Barpeta district in Assam, followed by another three in Dhubri district for their links with the Islamic terror networks. Police have also claimed that the arrested people also had links with the two terrorists who got killed during the Burdwan blast.
