The Army has found the mortal remains of one of its soldiers after 38 years in the Siachen glacier.  The soldier has been identified as Lance Naik Chandra Shekhar. He was reported missing after an avalanche hit his team on the world’s highest battlefield.

A patrol team on Saturday found the remains of Shekhar in an old bunker at the Siachen glacier at a height of more than 16,000 feet.  An identification disc around the neck of the skeleton helped the army ascertain his identity.

The soldier served in the 19 Kumaon Regiment and hailed from Haldwani, Uttarakhand.  He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Giving the details of the recovery, sources also said his elder daughter was eight and the younger one only four when the mishap took place.  Several retired soldiers of his unit and family members are likely to attend the ceremony when his mortal remains arrive in Haldwani.

The mishap took place in 1984 shortly after the Indian Army was deployed at the Siachen glacier.
