Dense fog forces 150 trains to stop in their tracks
Intense cold wave continued to sweep across North India affecting normal life, including rail, road and air traffic. Dense fog and poor visibility hampered train movement with Railways either cancelling or rescheduling 150 trains, some of them much beyond 24 hours.
However, a slight improvement in the foggy weather conditions led to only eight flights being delayed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport as compared to over 40 on Wednesday. No flight was cancelled during this period, according to airport authorities and the low-visibility procedures (lVP) was enforced at 20:05 hours on Wednesday till midnight as the visibility was 300 metres at 5.30 am and 8.30 am.
The worst-affected remains the train services during the last one week and is likely to continue for the next fortnight. If the situation persists, more trains will have to be cancelled and some of the trains would be mandatorily cancelled to optimise the scheduled train service. As many as 150 trains are running inordinately late in the Northern Railways zone, including Rajdhanis and Durontos coming from eastern part of the country like Ranchi, Patna, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati.
