In what could be a major dampener to the DMK’s hopes of regaining power in Tamil Nadu, MK Alagiri, elder son of party chief M Karunanidhi, has said that the AIADMK is all set to win the 2016 Assembly election. In an exclusive interview to The Pioneer, he said the DMK was in a “pretty bad” condition and it has become like the Dravidar Kazhagam, the precursor to the DMK.
“I’ll come back to active politics after May 19.
I’ll work only for the DMK,” said the Madurai strongman.
He had told reporters at Chennai on Tuesday that he and his supporters would not support anybody in the May 16 Assembly election.
Referring to the cancellation of an election rally to be addressed by MK Stalin, his younger brother and the chosen heir of Karunanidhi at Vriddachalam in Cuddalore district on Tuesday following open revolt by party cadre, Alagiri said this was the first such incident in the history of the DMK. He said the party has become weak like the Dravida Kazhakam, an outfit being led by K Veeramani, a rationalist leader who is more of an education entrepreneur.
“I was born in the DMK and hence I’ll live and die for that party only. Once these elections are over and results declared, those who love the DMK would understand where the party stands now. I will work hard to take the DMK back to its golden era,” said Alagiri.
Rebellion by the DMK cadre against the leadership is increasing by the day in various places in Tamil Nadu. Stalin was forced to cancel his rally on Tuesday hardly hours before the cadre turned against the leadership for overlooking the active party workers and for fielding sons and grandsons of former party strongmen.
