A massive truck bomb ripped through Kabul’s diplomatic quarter, bringing carnage to the streets of the Afghan capital on Wednesday as 90 people were killed and 400 were left injured. Bodies littered the scene and a towering plume of smoke rose from the area. The blast has caused some damage to the mission building.

Afghanistan Interior Ministry said a suicide bomber had detonated an explosives-packed vehicle in Zanbaq Square around 8:30 am. Afganistan Intelligence agency has claimed that the Haqqani network executed the blast under the guidance of Pakistan’s ISI.

In New Delhi, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted, “By God’s grace, Indian Embassy staff are safe in the massive #Kabul blast.”

Indian envoy in Kabul, Manpreet Vohra, said the bomb went off around 100 metres from the embassy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Spain as part of his visit to Europe, condemned the attack.

He said India stands with Afghanistan in fighting all forms of terrorism.
