Taking a tough stand against malpractices by its personnel, an Indian Army court martial has recommended dismissal of seven jawans from service besides jail sentences to them. The ruling came after the troopers were found guilty of selling medicines of the Armed forces hospital in the open market.

The jail sentences to the jawans range from two to six years, sources said here on Saturday. The malpractice took place in 2017 in the national Capital, they added.

A team of drug inspector and the police had raided a medical outlet in the Bhagirath Place market and recovered 27 medicines.  ‘Not for sale’ and Research and Referral (RR) Hospital markings were found on the medicines besides clinics run by the ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, they said.

At least, 10 army troopers were initially facing proceedings for misappropriation of medicines and procuring money from civilians to sell them these medicines. The Court Martial proceedings held in the Meerut Cantonment found seven guilty while others were acquitted, they said.

The counsel of the accused jawans Advocate Anand Kumar said he will challenge the court martial decision in the High Court.
