Ten people, including three policemen, two children and three women, were injured when a speeding Wagon-R car with seven members of a family in it rammed into a Police Control Room (PCR) van.
The incident occurred in south Delhi’s Nizamuddin area around 1.50 am on Friday.
Another PCR van was rushed to the spot and the injured were taken to hospital for treatment.
A police constable suffered grievous injuries while others received minor injuries and were released soon after being treated. The accident took place when Mehrajuddin, a 25-year-old resident of Budh Vihar, was returning home from a wedding in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, along with six of his family members. Police said Mehrajuddin did not know how to drive but insisted on driving the car.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that Mehrajuddin’s father Mohammed Jabbaruddin was driving the car earlier but his son insisted on driving and took control of the vehicle,” a senior police officer said. Mehrajuddin was reportedly exhausted after driving for a long distance and fell asleep on the steering wheel.
As he reached the signal at Mathura Road near Sunder Nagar, he lost control of the car and rammed into a PCR van patrolling the area.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Vinod Singh, Constable Chandan Singh and Constable Darra Singh were in the police vehicle at the time of the accident.
Some passersby immediately informed another PCR about the incident.
“After receiving the call, senior cops swung into action. local police along with an Assistant Commissioner of Police of the area also reached the spot and the injured were rushed to AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital. Constable Chandan is still recuperating in the hospital while the others were discharged after first aid,” the police officer added.
A case of rash driving and causing hurt under Section 279 and 379 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the driver at the Hazrat Nizamuddin Police Station of South-East Delhi.
At the time of the incident, Mehrajuddin’s parents, sister, wife and two children, including his four-month-old son were in the car.
