Turning formula on its head

Turning formula on its head

It would be easy to ascribe the Rs 10.70 crore mega opening of Veere Di Wedding to Bollywood finally yielding to the avenging queens  and letting them take their place next to the brigade of charismatic Khans. But it indicates a larger societal shift and acceptance of women-oriented films not necessarily being about messaging and gender justice but about the lighter side of life. In one word, as producer Ekta Kapoor tweeted, her film helmed by four women actors and crew, has made Indian cinema “gender agnostic.” If her earlier project lipstick Under My Burkha was about repressed private lives, Veere... is celebratory, with uninhibited discussions on female sexuality, free speech and expressions while resolving the core issue of the protagonists’ place and self-sufficiency in a world where relationships are in a flux only because women are not letting go of the counter-pressure to the male narrative and cliches. A commercial entertainer, it may have lacked some cinematic finesse but its masala fun had hordes of women grouping in front of cinema houses over the weekend. The film was their reason to come out and scream what they cannot with their families or husbands --- female companionship. Veere... has become the third highest Bollywood opener in 2018 and even beat the all-male gang-up on being tormented in a woman’s world, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2. The tidal response shows that the audience is ready for all-women entertainers as well. Now only if the industry sheds its obsession with triple-flipping heroes in mid-air.
