Saudi–Pakistan Defence Pact Raises Indian Concerns
Published on:

The recent signing of a defence cooperation pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan introduces a new dynamic in South Asia, with significant implications for India (India flags Pakistan, Saudi defence pact, September 19). For Pakistan, long a strategic adversary of India, the agreement represents both diplomatic leverage and a military boost at a time of economic distress and regional isolation.

Saudi Arabia, however, presents a dual equation for India. It is not only a vital energy supplier and a key trade partner but also the host country for millions of Indian expatriates who contribute substantial remittances. Any shift in Riyadh’s alignment must therefore be read with both caution and nuance. The convergence of Saudi and Pakistani defence interests may embolden Pakistan’s military posture, fuelling concerns in New Delhi about possible collaboration in intelligence, training, or arms transfer. Yet, the depth of Saudi Arabia’s economic interdependence with India acts as a stabilising counterweight that limits an overt tilt towards Islamabad. For India, the challenge lies in ensuring this cooperation does not harden into a strategic axis detrimental to its long-term interests. Proactive diplomacy is essential to protect vital trade and energy ties with Saudi Arabia while simultaneously maintaining vigilance over Pakistan’s manoeuvres. A balanced strategy — engagement without complacency, caution without alarmism — will remain India’s best safeguard.
