Though SCO's journey has been transformative, it must navigate the cross-purposes of its members

The recently concluded Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit hosted by India virtually marked a significant milestone in the organisation's journey, reaffirming its role as a key platform for promoting regional stability, economic cooperation and dialogue among member states. The SCO emerged in 2001, primarily as a security-focused organisation between China, Russia and Central Asian nations, with the aim of addressing common security challenges, combating terrorism and fostering stability in the region. Over time, the SCO has evolved into a multifaceted platform encompassing political, economic and cultural cooperation among its member states. The recent SCO summit witnessed several noteworthy takeaways that highlight the organisation's progress and potential for growth. Firstly, the expansion of membership was a significant development, with Iran joining as a full member and countries like Turkey and Sri Lanka becoming dialogue partners. This expansion not only demonstrates the growing relevance and appeal of the SCO but also opens doors for enhanced regional integration and collaboration on diverse issues. Prime Minister Modi, in chair, once again called the members to slam those supporting terrorism. A clear hint to members to pressure Pakistan. Security and counterterrorism cooperation, being the core areas of focus for the SCO, were reaffirmed during the summit. Member states reiterated their commitment to joint efforts in combating terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking, emphasising the need for collective action to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Economic cooperation emerged as a focal point at the summit, with member states emphasising the importance of strengthening trade ties, promoting investment and enhancing connectivity within the region. The signing of agreements on transportation, energy and technological cooperation highlights the SCO's commitment to fostering economic integration. Furthermore, the SCO summit recognised the importance of cultural and people-to-people exchanges in building trust and understanding among member states. Initiatives such as educational exchanges, cultural festivals and tourism promotion were emphasised as means to foster harmony within the SCO. However, SCO must also navigate the roadblocks that could slow it down. It faces several challenges that require attention for its continued growth and effectiveness. These include divergent interests among member states, geopolitical complexities, security concerns and border disputes, external influences and cultural diversity. To address these challenges, open communication, mutual trust and inclusive decision-making are crucial. With proactive efforts from member states, the SCO can fulfil its potential as a key player in fostering regional stability, economic development and multilateral cooperation. The SCO's future trajectory appears promising. It is poised to gain geopolitical influence through its expanding membership and engagement with observer states and regional organisations.
