Vitamins and minerals which boost immunity are our best defence against viral infections. They should be replenished before it is too late
Covid-19 emerged as one of the most challenging periods in human history. The pandemic disrupted lives globally, causing unprecedented health crises, economic turmoil, and social upheaval. Healthcare systems were pushed to their limits, and communities faced isolation. As the world rises from the ashes of the COVID-19 devastation, a sharp rise in H3N2 influenza cases has been reported in India. Additionally, the country is also witnessing a surge in COVID-19 infections again.
One of the preventive steps taken by individuals around the world — asides from social distancing, face covering, and reduced contact — was the use of vitamins and minerals to boost the immune system and increase a person's chance of fighting off the virus. Considering the current situation, this practice must be maintained. The Indian dietary supplements market, for instance, has grown exponentially in the last few years to reach INR 436.5 billion in 2022, according to IMARC. There are also projections that the market will surpass INR 958.1 billion by 2028 at a CAGR of 13.5%; a climb that will see India become one of the global leaders in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, reaching approximately Rs. 148 crores by 2025.
Immunity boosters
There are several options available to keep the immunity level high. From pharmaceuticals to nutraceuticals, and other modern ranges, there's certainly a choice for everyone. In India, for instance, nutraceuticals have grown tremendously in popularity and acceptance, especially when it has to do with immune enhancement. The bioactive derivatives from sources like phytochemicals, antioxidants, amino acids, fatty acids, probiotics, etc., found in nutraceuticals make them a viable defence against viral attacks.
Nutraceuticals containing Vitamins C, Zinc and D, as well as selenium are active against COVID-19. The physical barriers that our body puts up against such viruses can be enhanced by Vitamin D, while also boosting antimicrobial peptides. When combined with the anti-viral and anti-inflammatory capabilities of Vitamin C and the action of selenium on the cytotoxic effector cells, the herbs, processed foods, beverages, diets, and nutrients that make up nutraceuticals help in enhancing immune functions and preventing viral infections. Also, Zinc plays a supportive role in COVID-19 management by bolstering the immune system and potentially reducing the severity of the illness.
Another unique option is the plethora of D3 formulations that can be found across the country and the rest of the world. Beyond muscle movement and bone health, D3 is also considered an effective immune booster. Supplements and Nutraceuticals made from fatty fish flesh or fish liver oils, along with other derivatives from organic D3 sources are useful options for immune enhancement. The good thing is, they come in different forms, including soft gel capsules, gummies, dissolvable tablets, powders, and so on.
Modern-day Nutraceutical manufacturers have become more creative than ever before, owing to so many reasons. The emergence of gummies came about as a result of the need to make drug consumption easier and more convenient. What this indicates is that anyone can take immune boosters on the move without the need for water or a break just to take a drug.
Defences against viral
Tweaking one's diet to include more vitamins and minerals is also extremely important. Supplementation is the most convenient way to achieve a balance in our diet. Emphasising the importance of safety, always consult a doctor before taking supplements, as this can help prevent potential side effects and ensure compatibility with one's specific health conditions.
