With six nations likely to join BRICS, the organisation is set to become a major world player

The 2023 BRICS Summit concluded recently, marking another significant milestone in the cooperative efforts of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The summit, held against the backdrop of complex geopolitical dynamics and global challenges, showcased the importance of collective action and diplomatic engagement in shaping a better world. A major decision reached at the BRICS Summit was to expand its membership to include six new members. These six members are Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Now it would be a strong group of 11 countries and could well be a G20 in the making. However, before that happens it would have to work out a mechanism to iron out the differences amongst the members and share a common vision and roadmap. One of the standout moments of the summit was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address and his crucial meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, both of which underscored the potential for collaboration and understanding even in the face of differences. The PM had interactions with other BRICS leaders, too. Modi highlighted India's concerns to Xi on unresolved issues along the LAC in the India-China border areas. The two leaders agreed to direct their officials to intensify efforts at expeditious disengagement and de-escalation. How far that happens on the ground is difficult to say at the moment but at least some headway has been made.

Prime Minister Modi's address at the BRICS summit captured the essence of the organisation's principles: cooperation, solidarity and mutual respect. He emphasised the need for BRICS nations to pool their strengths and resources to address common challenges such as climate change, economic inequality and the COVID-19 pandemic. Modi's call for greater technological collaboration and sustainable development resonated well, reflecting India's commitment to innovation and shared progress. However, the spotlight remained on the bilateral meeting between Modi and Xi. Their discussion held immense significance, given the history and complexities of India-China relations. In an atmosphere where geopolitical tensions have occasionally strained these ties, the meeting offered a platform for dialogue, understanding and constructive engagement. The meeting also showcased the diplomatic acumen of both leaders. Their willingness to engage in open dialogue, despite differences, demonstrates a mature approach to dispute resolution and the recognition that dialogue remains crucial in preventing escalation. While the meeting is not expected to resolve all outstanding issues, it laid the groundwork for future negotiations and confidence-building measures. The leaders' agreement on enhancing people-to-people contact and promoting cultural exchanges also reflects a recognition that deeper understanding between their nations can foster long-term goodwill and cooperation. The BRICS nations have sent out a clear message: Understanding and collective action remain the cornerstone of addressing global challenges.
