Zelenskyy urges tougher action against Russia over Ukraine strikes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday criticised the international community for not taking tougher action against Russia as Moscow continues missile and drone strikes on civilian areas of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said international sanctions and diplomatic efforts to isolate Moscow had failed to stop the war and called for stronger pressure on Russia.
“Unfortunately, there has been too little response from the international community to these strikes, which are taking people's lives practically every day,” Zelenskyy said in a social media post.
He warned that Moscow should not enter the winter believing it could carry out missile and drone attacks without consequences.
The overnight Russian attacks into Wednesday killed at least two people and injured seven others across six regions of Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.
In Kyiv, a drone damaged the 11th floor and sparked a fire on the 12th floor of a 22-storey residential building in the Darnytskyi district. Four people were injured in the attack, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said.
Olha Smal, a 62-year-old resident of the building, said the blast wave threw her across her kitchen and that one of her bedrooms caught fire. She also said her pregnant neighbour was injured.
The United Nations said last month that Russian aerial attacks in July killed 437 Ukrainian civilians and wounded more than 2,600, making it the deadliest month for civilians since March 2022.
More than 16,800 Ukrainian civilians have been killed and over 51,000 wounded since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, according to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had carried out long-range strikes on Russia’s Novorossiysk, targeting a naval base, military port facilities and an oil-loading terminal.
Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said four people, including a child, were killed and 29 wounded in the Ukrainian drone attack.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defences had shot down 596 Ukrainian drones between late Tuesday and early Wednesday.
