Woman Doctor found dead in Jalandhar; Family alleges husband’s affair, loan fraud and harassment

A government doctor was found dead at her residence in Jalandhar, Punjab, triggering allegations of domestic abuse, financial fraud, and marital conflict, police said.
The deceased, identified as Dr Meenakshi Sood, who was posted in Kapurthala, was discovered dead at her home in Jalandhar on Wednesday morning. Police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by her father and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to officials, Jalandhar Police received information through the control room and reached the residence in Kewal Vihar, where the house was found locked from inside. After breaking open a glass panel with the help of locals, officers recovered the doctor’s body from the floor.
Police have initiated proceedings under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), while awaiting post-mortem and forensic reports to determine the exact cause of death.
The family of Dr Meenakshi Sood has alleged that she was subjected to years of mental and physical harassment by her husband, Dr Piyush Sood, who runs a private eye care hospital in Jalandhar. They have also accused him of financial misconduct, including taking loans worth crores in her name without her consent.
According to the father’s complaint, the doctor recently discovered a loan of nearly ₹2.5 crore linked to her name during a bank inquiry, allegedly without her signature, which caused her severe mental distress. The family also claims additional loans were taken for a vehicle and hospital-related expenses.
The family further alleged that the couple had been living separately since mid-2025 due to marital disputes and that divorce proceedings were being considered.
They have also accused the husband of an extramarital affair and alleged repeated domestic violence, including physical assault. Police, however, have not independently verified these claims and said all angles are being investigated.
Officials said the accused husband has not yet been questioned as his phone remains switched off. Investigators are also examining digital and financial records as part of the probe.
Police have stated that the cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem and forensic examination reports are received.
Further investigation is underway.
