WhatsApp introduces browser calling with call transfer, waiting room features

Meta-owned WhatsApp has launched browser-based audio and video calling, allowing users to make and receive calls directly from a web browser without downloading a desktop application.

The new feature supports one-on-one and group calls and includes screen sharing, reactions and a dedicated calls tab for viewing call history and favourites, WhatsApp said in a blog post.

The company has also introduced a call transfer feature that allows users to move an ongoing group call between devices, such as from a mobile phone to a desktop, without disconnecting and rejoining the call.

A new waiting room feature gives hosts greater control over group calls. When the "require approval to join" option is enabled, participants joining through a call link are placed in a virtual waiting area until the host approves their entry.

WhatsApp has also introduced technical improvements aimed at enhancing call quality. Its "QuickHD" feature is designed to provide high-definition video from the start of a call, while noise suppression reduces background sounds to improve audio clarity.

The new features are being rolled out gradually, the company mentioned.
