Vilathikulam DMK MLA arrested over alleged remarks against Tamil Nadu CM Vijay
DMK MLA G.V. Markandeyan, who represents the Vilathikulam Assembly constituency, was arrested on Monday over allegations of making objectionable remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Police took the legislator into custody after his comments at a recent public event were deemed threatening and offensive, triggering legal action.
The arrest has intensified the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
According to police, a case was registered against Markandeyan following complaints that his remarks could provoke unrest. The investigation is underway, and authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the speech. The arrest comes amid heightened political tensions in the state, where both the ruling party and the opposition have frequently traded accusations over governance and public statements.
The DMK strongly condemned the arrest, alleging that the state government was using law enforcement to target opposition leaders. Senior party leaders demanded Markandeyan's immediate release and accused the government of attempting to suppress dissent.
The ruling TVK, however, defended the police action, stating that no individual is above the law and that inflammatory remarks against constitutional authorities would be dealt with according to legal provisions.
